Credenza Desk
Will having this desk and hutch as a college student make me look old?

http://www.computerdesksnmore.com/Common/NoBot/Bush-EX45611-Saratoga-Hutch-for-Credenza.htm

Is this appropriate for a college student, or should I get something more simple. I've looked over dozens of websites for tables that were thousands of dollars, and this was most affordable and it looked nice. It isn't too simple, but not yet too elegant and mature. Plus enough space to fit a computer and my books and stuff. But I don't want to look like an old woman with it. Is it too mature or is it right for a student because of it's elegance?

I don't think you'll look like an old women. Just someone with elegant taste =3 Don't worry about what anyone else thinks, if you like it, then get it!

You can rule an empire from a desk--if you know how to do it correctly. Too many people treat their offices and their desks with benign neglect. A desk is not a filing cabinet, and window sills are not permanent storage locations.

Deskmanship for Fun and Profit--Taking Charge of Your Desk

Did you see the movie Top Gun, where Tom Cruise plays a Navy fighter pilot? Among his many responsibilities in flying some of the nation's most expensive aircrafts is landing those jets safely on aircraft carrier decks. Two months after seeing the movie, I read an article in the Smithsonian magazine about how aircraft carrier decks must be completely clean and clear before a plane lands. "All hands on deck," on an aircraft carrier means that everyone, even senior officers, must pick up a push broom and sweep the deck clear. The goal is to leave nothing on the surface of the deck, not even a paper clip, to ensure a successful landing. If there is debris on the deck as a plane approaches, or an earlier plane has not left the landing strip, the approaching plane is likely to crash.

Your desk is like the deck of an aircraft carrier. If you take the next pile of stuff you receive and park it in the corner of your desk with the notion that an organizing fairy will do something with it, good luck! Nobody's coming to help you to manage your desk. Each new item you pile on will figuratively crash in the smoldering ruins of the accumulations in progress.

Get into the habit of managing your desktop as if it's an important element to winning back your time -- because it is. If you have but one project, one piece of paper, whatever you're working on in front of you, and the rest of your desk is clear, you're bound to have more energy, focus, and direction for that task or project. If distractions compete for your attention--you have piles, reports, memos, and faxes, confronting you--how can you have the same focus, energy, and direction on the task at hand?

What Do You Keep On Top of Your Desk?

What you keep on top your desk is uniquely individual. Anything you use on a daily basis, such as a stapler, roll of tape, and even a pen, needs to stay on top of your desk. Remove anything you can safely remove. Where will it go? You might have a credenza behind you. In case you're thinking, "You've asked me to shift my stuff from one surface to another," you're right. When it's behind you, you're not facing it! Inside your desk you retain items you use weekly, if not daily. Don't store supplies in your desk. Those belong further away from you, in a file cabinet or supply locker. Your goal is to maintain the minimal amount of items on and in your desk that enable you to work efficiently.

After you've cleared your desk, apply the same principle to the top of your filing cabinet, closet shelves, and other areas of your life: your dining room table, your car's glove compartment, the trunk of your car, and your health club locker. The less things you have in these places, the greater sense of control you have over your environment. Your goal is to have just what you need and not much more. Once these flat surfaces are under control, you gain a heightened sense of control over your time.

Staying In Shape in Front of the Computer Terminal

As a quick aside, because you sit at your desk so often, and in many instances face the monolithic computer monitor, here are a few tips from various office equipment manufacturers for overcoming the sedentary inclinations that the PC propagates:

* Breathe in slowly through your nose, holding it for two seconds, then exhale through your mouth. Repeat this several times and you'll gain an energy boost.

* Roll your shoulders forward 5 times in a wide circular motion, then go in reverse.

* Turn your head slowly from side to side and look over each shoulder. Count to 3. Repeat the exercise 5 to 10 times.

* While in your chair, slowly bend your upper body between your knees. Stay this way for a few seconds, then sit up and relax. Repeat this to stretch your back.

* Hold your arms straight out in front of you. Raise and lower your hands bending them at your wrists. Repeat this several times. This stretches the muscles in your forearms and gives your wrists relief.

* Fold your arms in front of you, raise them up to your shoulders, then push your elbows straight back. Hold this for a couple of seconds. This gives your upper back and shoulder blades relief. Repeat 5 to 10 times.

* Make a tight fist with your hands and hold this for several seconds. Then spread your fingers as far as you can and hold this position for five seconds. Repeat this exercise several times. Your fingers and hands will feel relaxed and nimble.

If you do even a few of these exercises, you'll feel better about your time during the work day and afterward.
